When it is acting really slow but not quite dead, I'll tell it to reboot from the webGUI, and it takes several minutes before pings stop, and then several more minutes before its operational again, like 5-6 minutes total or more. Since the old VM's are not getting deleted, the drive runs out of space, crashes, and requires a power cycle to function again.

So I think the VSquare software is actually telling it to delete, but not expecting several minutes and doesn't have error handling and probably moves on.

Windows will show the speed to be dismal, like 0.1MB/s. But I've gone to manually delete those old VM's and they sometimes just refuse to delete quickly. I've been complaining that the VSquare is not deleting old VM's after successful backups. Using it to backup VM's from a Windows server using VSquare. I am just a bit bummed out by the backup. But it worked and in the future I will be adding content gradually so this is not an issue for me. Yes, as others have noted, the initial file copy of 1.4 terabytes to the drive was slow. Other than that, it has been fine for me.

My attitude towards this is that the workflow of backing up to an external drive should be pretty common for this unit and the technology should serve the human and not the other way around. I was hoping that this unit would make the process simple, but it does not. It looks like I will have to resort to using software to back the unit up to an external drive. After searching the web, I discovered a lot of complaints about this particular feature. FYI, I copied 1.4 terabytes to the drive. I have tried 3 times over the past few days and the creation of the safepoint has always failed after several hours. This is because attaching my external drive to the unit's usb port and creating a safepoint does not work for me. Maybe this is an incorrect interpretation, but I have not been able to test the functionality. So it would appear that the safepoint is not a good general backup of the unit unless you want to restore to a new WD My Cloud. "Creating a safepoint ensures that you can easily recover your data from a specific point in time to a new WD My Cloud device in the unlikely event that your WD My Cloud device fails"

But reading the manual shows the following: The first warning, is that the software that comes with the unit allows you to do this and create a 'safepoint' on an external drive. Perhaps I should have researched better, but the product descriptions and youtube reviews I saw made it seem like I could easily attach an external drive via usb to the unit in order to back it up. My biggest gripe is with the backup options for the drive. I would say that the mixed reviews are warranted. I am still in the getting to know you phase, so take my comments with a grain of salt. I've had this product for about two weeks now. can any one comment on their experience with one of these? the reviews seems to be pretty 50/50 on these.there are some real horror stories out there.
